If you are wanting to change the artistic styling or light intensity in your render, light path expressions (LPE) in Iray for Maya will make this easy. Light path expressions are seperatel rendered in parallel with your main render, meaning they are used in post-production to create the style that you want or draw attention to specific areas of the design or scene.
Whatever the render, being able to define the LPE's for objects and lights adds a new level of detail to components and objects. Highlighting the intensity of reflections and refractions through a glass object or increased brightness from a light source are prime examples of how light path expressions work.
