FAQ

We are still at a very early stage in the life of the new Iray plugins website. We want to ensure elements of the website are of the highest quality to facilitate the development of the community and your ability to get involved. At this early stage, we have compiled the more frequently asked questions we have received from yourselves. Whilst not many, we feel these are crucial answers that need to be answered:

I've updated to Iray+ 1.6 and my graphics cards are no longer detected. What should I do?
A recurring problem we have seen throughout the early stages of the new Iray website. Not to worry - if you update your NVIDIA drivers to the latest version, your graphics card should become visible.

Have certain features in the trial version been disabled which will be made available if I purchase 3ds Max?
Not at all! All features that you find in your trial version will be available if you decide to purchase your chosen plugin. We didnt want to place any restrictions on your experience with Iray for 3ds max.

I am a student; are there any available free student licenses that I can download for Iray 3ds max?
We unfortunately are not currently offering the opportunity to provide free student licenses. This maybe something we implement in the near future, but we really want to stress that this is only a possibility and is not a definite plan of action moving forward.

I am struggling to understand the different Iray products that are currently available including Iray+ – could you provide a little clarity on the matter?
Absolutely not a problem! Firstly, NVIDIA make a rendering library called Iray, which used NVIDIA graphics cards to render images in a physically-accurate way. This is a C++ SDK written by developers, for developers. You may have seen reference to this in your searches but it’s unlikely that you have access to it.
Lightworks have made a C++ rendering library called Iray+; this is built on top of NVIDIA’s Iray rendering library, built by developers, for developers. ‘Iray for Max’ is a plugin to 3ds Max that uses the Iray+ rendering library (and by extension the NVIDIA Iray rendering library) to render images in 3ds Max. Iray for Max is still known colloquially as 'Iray+' since it was called that during the Beta program, but since official release it has always been known as 'Iray for Max', which is also known as Autodesk 3ds Max.
